Are Skincare Supplements the Solution?

These days beauty foods and supplements are everywhere. Do they really work? Do you even need them?

Every known brand is putting out shiny new supplements in their line. They are in every form, juices, pills and powders.

I love the idea of beauty supplements, they are exciting yet overwhelming. I mean no one should be spending extra only for the feels.

Before we get more into it, beauty supplements contain vitamins that are essential for the skin health. like vitamin A, vitamin C, and biotin. On the other hand, multivitamins contains other vitamins as well that aren’t as essential for the skin.

Which is why it is recommended to not substitute multivitamins with beauty supplements. Beauty supplements can be taken as an extension of your current beauty regime.

Do they work? It depends. As with anything in the stores, some products are more effective than others.

These are the ingredients that are most commonly found in the supplements and I’ve done some research on what you could find beneficial for your skin.

Biotin:

It has been in the beauty industry for a decades and has been scientifically proven to strengthen nails and promote hair growth.

Vitamin A:

It can help cell growth and collagen production. It can also help with acne, eczema, sunburns, and psoriasis.

Vitamin C:

You might have already known how good it is to apply Vitamin C topically. It has brightening and anti-aging benefits. Taking it orally can help UV protection and generally bolstering the skin’s barrier.

Vitamin E:

It hasn’t been confirmed if Vitamin E is beneficial for skin or not. A study condicted in 2016 claimed, “After so many years of research on vitamin E, it is still unclear as to whether millions of dollars worth of vitamin E products paid for by patients and consumers have been of any benefit.”

Collagen:

Out of all the skin supplements, collagen is the most hyped. From youtubers to celerbrities, have made it a part of their daily routine. Yet, it hasn’t been confirmed to show a significant difference.

Some studies have showed that it improves laxity in aged skin, however, it doesn’t help with firmness, anti-aging, or moisture retention.

Hyaluronic Acid

Yes, you can take it as a pill. You may have heard of how effective it is on your skin, however, taking a supplement isn’t as effective.

The hyaluronic acid doesn’t get absorbed and make it to the skin as it can when applied topically.

Fish Oil

Fish oil can promote overall hydration to the skin, which can result in more youthful, buoyant complexion and may also prevent acne.

Even though, beauty supplements aren’t necessary. They can be helpful in supporting your skin’s health. It is shown that beauty supplement sales are set to reach $6.8 billion by the end of 2024.

Experts stress the importance of scanning the ingredients and dosages of your beauty supplements. Too much of anything isn’t good.

You can be sure of the supplement if it has a USP Verified Mark.

It’s good to keep in mind that these beauty supplements aren’t a magic cure. They may be exciting to try, yet the boring old self-care tricks work the best. You know, staying hydrating, getting enough sleep, not stressing the small stuff, and the food that you’re eating.
